World Press Photo is happy to present the jury chairs for the three themed categories Sports, Nature, and Portraits. Bill Frakes, Staffan Widstrand, and Elisabeth Biondi will work alongside jury chair Gary Knight during the 2013 World Press Photo Contest. Judging will take place at the World Press Photo office in Amsterdam from 1 until 15 February 2013. The results of the contest will be announced on 15 February 2013.
American sports photographer Bill Frakes takes on the role of chair of the Sports category. Frakes is a Sports Illustrated staff photographer and has received numerous national and international awards for his work, including four World Press Photo awards. This is the second time he takes part in the jury of World Press Photo; the first time was in 2010.
Staffan Widstrand, a Swedish photographer, author and activist, will chair the Nature category. Widstrand is a winner of several international photography and book awards. He is also a founder of the mass communication initiative Wild Wonders of Europe. In 2011, Outdoor Photography magazine called him “one of the world's most influential nature photographers”.
The chair of the Portraits category is Elisabeth Biondi, Germany/USA. In 2011, Biondi started working as an independent curator, 15 years after she had become The New Yorker’s first visuals editor. She had previously worked for Stern and Geo magazines, as well as for Vanity Fair. She was a World Press Photo Contest judge previously in 1994 and, in 2004, she chaired the contest jury.
The News and Documentary jury, as well as the final rounds of the judging, will be chaired by Gary Knight, founder photographer of VII Photo Agency.
The full jury will be published when the contest opens for entries at the beginning of December.
