Many Dutch visitors to the website of TNT Post, a division of our corporate sponsor TNT, took advantage of the opportunity to choose their own favorite picture from the 2009 World Press Photo award winners.

Most votes went to a striking photo of Palestinian protestors taking cover from Israeli tear gas behind an olive tree. The planned extension of a barrier cutting the Palestinians off from their land had led to weekly demonstrations near Ramallah on the West Bank. Made by Canadian Kevin Frayer, an AP photographer based in Jerusalem, the picture received the third prize for singles in the General News category.

World Press Photo director Michiel Munneke emphasized the difference between the professional jury's perspective and the public's choice and said: "We wanted to know how the Dutch public judged the winning photographs and we were very pleased with the many reactions."
