During the annual Awards Ceremony of the World Press Photo contest on Sunday 22 April in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, the Mayor of the City of Amsterdam Dr. Job Cohen presented the Chairman of the Executive Board Gerrit Jan Wolffensperger with a Royal Decoration promoting him to Officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau.

According to the Mayor, Mr. Wolffensperger "has committed himself to public service during an extensive period in time, inspiring and stimulating others in the process."

Wolffensperger has been been a member of World Press Photo board since 1986 and chairman since 1998. Later this month, he will officially step down from the board and pass on the responsibilities of chairman to the current vice chairman of the executive board Pieter Broertjes, editor in chief of the Dutch daily de Volkskrant.

In addition to his long-term commitment to World Press Photo, Wolffensperger has been active in supporting photography in the Netherlands through his involvement in several other organizations, such as the Nederlands Foto Instituut, FotografenFederatie and the Burafo foundation.
