Geert van Kesteren is a Dutch photojournalist based in Amsterdam. His book Mwendanjangula! Aids in Zambia, an inside report on the Aids pandemic in Africa, was banned from the 2000 World Aids Congress in South Africa, despite the fact that these photographs had won several international awards and were published in magazines across the world. Van Kesteren covered Operation Desert Fox in Iraq for the Dutch weekly Vrij Nederland. On his second visit, he had an exclusive interview for Stern magazine with Uday Hussein, Saddam's playboy son. He was assigned to report on Iraq by Unicef, Newsweek and Stern. This resulted in the book and exhibition Why mister, Why?, a work bearing witness to what went wrong during the American occupation. Geert van Kesteren regularly works for Stern, GEO, Newsweek, M magazine, and many more. Van Kesteren's awards include Dutch Most Talented Young Photographer of the Year 1994, Silver Camera 1998, for Dutch Picture of the Year, Dutch Photographer of the Year 1998, UNICEF's Children Photo of the Year Award, 2nd place, 2000, Pictures of the Year 2000, USAMagazine, Division, Issue Reporting, Picture Stories, 2nd place, Aids in Zambia for Newsweek Magazine, Hansel Mieth Preise 2002, Polisario for GEO, American Photography 2004 photo contest for the 2003 bomb attack at the United Nations HQ in Baghdad, for Newsweek.
