Sergey Maximishin's career has alternated between photography and science, starting as military photographer for the Soviet Army on Cuba in 1985 and then completing a degree in Physics in 1991. Seven years later he graduated from the Faculty of Photojournalism in St Petersburg and went on to become staff photographer for Izvestia newspaper. Sergey has been working for the German agency Focus since 2003. His work has been published in such media as The Times, Time, Newsweek, het Parool, Liberation, Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Stern, Business Week, Focus, Der Profile, Corriere della Sera, Izvestia, and Ogonyok. He was awarded multiple prizes in the Russia Press Photo contest four years in a row and earned 1st place in the Arts and Entertainment (single) category of the 2004 World Press Photo contest.
