David Butow (43), USA, was born in New York City and grew up in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in government, he moved to Los Angeles where he worked for newspapers for a few years before starting his current work as a freelance magazine photographer.

As a contract photographer with U.S. News & World Report and a member of the Redux Pictures agency, his assignments have taken him to Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and South America. In recent years he has covered political and military events in Iraq and Afghanistan. His project photographing Shanghai, China, will be published as a book by National Geographic Traveler in the summer of 2007.

Butow's work on Iraq and Kurdistan from a pre-war trip in 2000 was shown at the international festival Visa Pour l'Image in Perpignan, France. In addition, his personal work on the Uighur ethnic group in China has been the subject of solo shows in New York and Los Angeles. He has received various awards from World Press Photo, University of Missouri Pictures of the Year, NPPA Best of Photojournalism, the Association of Alternative Weeklies and American Photography Annual.
