After matriculating from Stellenberg High School in the Western Cape, Henk Kruger did various jobs before visiting the United Kingdom. It was there that he realized he wanted to pursue photography as a career. He felt pictures better described his experiences abroad to friends back home. So, from 2004 to 2006 he studied photography at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, going on to a six-week internship at the Cape Argus. After two years as a contract photographer with the paper, Kruger was given a permanent position and is now chief photographer.

He says that growing up during the apartheid era, he was sheltered from what went on under the harsh regime, and that seeing photographs of what had actually happened was the only way he was exposed to the realities of the period. He now believes that a photograph may be one's only link to the past, and the power a photo may hold is what fuels his passion for taking pictures.
