Luiz Vasconcelos was born in Sena Madureira, a country town in the Brazilian state of Acre, in 1950. When he was 17, he moved to Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas. Vasconcelos began his career as a photographer when he was 20, working for Diário do Povo and Tribuna do Maranhão (in São Luís, northeastern Brazilian), and later for A Critica, where he has worked for the past 35 years.

During his professional life, Vasconcelos has traveled all over the Amazon, and through much of the rest of the country. He says that he prefers to photograph action scenes, such as conflict situations and sports.
