Yasuyoshi Chiba is a freelance photographer based in Nairobi, Kenya. He was born in 1971 and studied photography at Musashino Art University in Tokyo. In 1995 he began work as a staff photographer for the Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan's leading newspapers.
After receiving the Japan Association of Magazine Photographers Award in 2006, for his reportage of fishermen in Toyama Bay, Chiba went freelance and in 2007 moved to Kenya, where his wife had worked as an aid coordinator. After the 2007 post-election violence there, he started working with AFP as a stringer. His photographs of Kenya were nominated for the news award at Visa pour l'Image in 2008, and awarded the public prize in the Bayeux-Calvados Awards for war photography.
