Wu Xiaoling was born in 1972 and is based in Beijing. He graduated from the Beijing Foreign Studies University and served in the Foreign Ministry as a diplomat for some seven years.

Xiaoling started taking photos at the age of 15 with an old Russian Kiev-4 camera. Burning with ambition to tell the truth about life and express himself with his camera, he resigned from the Foreign Ministry and joined China's Xinhua News Agency, working from 2004 to 2008 as a photographer in the Berlin bureau. He then returned to China, where he is now a chief photo editor for the agency. Xiaoling says he is far more concerned about the people and situations beyond the news than the news itself.
