Carlos Gutiérrez was born in Puerto Varas, Chile, in 1975 and studied film and video at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Apart from that, and a Kodak photography course, he is largely self-taught. He has worked throughout Chile as well as in Brazil and Argentina, focusing on issues facing indigenous people, the region's architectural and cultural heritage, as well as nature and environmental issues. Gutiérrez's work is published widely in Chile, and has appeared internationally in such publications as Newsweek and National Geographic.
