Farah Abdi Warsameh was born in Abudwaq, a Somalian town near the Ethiopian border, in 1972. He completed his high school education in 1989 in the capital Mogadishu, just two years before the civil unrest broke out in the country. He fled Somalia with his family in late 1991 and lived in a northeastern Kenyan refugee camp for five years.
He returned to Somalia in 1997 and studied English language and journalism, then started his own private school in the port town of Kismaio. Warsameh, whose friends call him ‘Farah AP' for his work with The Associated Press, started working in Mogadishu as a professional photographer in 2000 as an assistant to a photo shop owner who taught him how to take pictures. He also became the head of a team of photographers making pictures of wedding parties.
His time in the photography field was so wonderful, he joined the local Somalia journalists making news pictures. In 2004, he worked with local Somali websites making pictures of militiamen, as well as daily life photos. Warsameh joined The Associated Press in 2007 and worked currently works as a stringer in the restive capital.
