Football focus for African training project |
The FIFA World Cup, one of the most mediagenic tournaments on the global sports calendar, provides the context for Twenty Ten, a training project for African journalists.
Aimed at raising the level of print, radio journalism and photojournalism throughout Africa, the
project is an initiative of World Press Photo, Free Voice, Africa Media
Online and lokaalmondiaal.
Funded
from an extra draw of the Dutch Postcode Lottery, Twenty Ten will give
African journalists from different disciplines the training they need
to professionally produce football-related stories for distribution to
audiences in Africa and beyond.
World Press Photo's Ruth de
Vries, who coordinates Twenty Ten, explains what the project wants to
achieve: "Many African media professionals are dependent on information
from the globally operating news organizations, even for reports about
Africa. Most of the news relating to Africa is generated outside the
continent. The initiators of Twenty Ten want to tackle this issue by
encouraging African journalists to create African
content. This will be distributed by Africa Media Online, an African
media agency which has as its motto ‘Africans telling Africa's story'.
By focusing on football-related stories, the project reaches out to a
broad audience."

The first workshops have been held earlier this year. The material produced by the participating photographers, writers and radio journalists has been posted on a dedicated website. The volume of productions featured on both this website and the site of Africa Media Online will increase as the World Cup draws nearer.
