Education and training are core objectives of the World Press Photo foundation. This is in line with the organization's mission to promote the highest standards in photojournalism, and to encourage international understanding through the medium. World Press Photo's support for professional press photography results in a direct involvement with photographers' own development. Ever since the first weekend-long seminar arranged to coincide with the World Press Photo Exhibition in Budapest in 1990, educative programs have helped fill gaps in conventional training.

World Press Photo works with photographers and students of photojournalism, both at an advanced stage, and at a basic level when access to further training is limited. Participants for World Press Photo educative programs are generally selected locally, rather than centrally by the organization's administration. Selection processes differ according to the specific program being set up. Photographers wishing to take part in a World Press Photo seminar or workshop should not apply to the Amsterdam office, but keep an eye out for local publicity regarding educative programs.
The foundation's most high-profile educative activity is the annual Joop Swart Masterclass held in Amsterdam. Other activities take the form of one-off workshops, more substantial seminars, and photojournalism training programs.

Seminars are aimed at a local photographic community. For one or two days photographers meet to discuss issues of interest and exchange views on portfolios. Participants for workshops are selected by national and international committees for five to ten days of activity-based learning, involving lectures and practical assignments. Training programs take place in developing countries where other photojournalistic educative programs are sparse or nonexistent.
We provide external support in running such activities to organizations that already have a proven track record in promoting journalism or photography.

Contact with participants does not stop after seminars, workshops or training programs. World Press Photo has built an intranet site which allows participants to join in online discussions, review modules and to showcase recent work. In Enter, an electronic magazine for this group and their peers, readers may view articles on recent professional and technical developments, and see their questions answered by experts.
