When Samuel Aranda's photograph was announced as the World Press Photo of the Year 2011 on 10 February, the identities of the two figures depicted in his photo were unknown. Three days later, on 13 February, The Yemen Times revealed that the woman in the photo is Fatima Al-Qaws and the man she is holding is her 18-year-old son, Zayed Al-Qaws. On 15 February, BBC correspondent Matthew Bannister of the World Service programme Outlook spoke with Ms Qaws and her son about the photo and the circumstances of the day Aranda took it.

On 16 February, Aranda returned to Yemen and met with Ms Qaws and her son. Read about their meeting on The New York Times Lens blog.
