Haitians rescue a woman trapped beneath rubble in the capital Port-au-Prince, minutes after an earthquake hit on 12 January.

12 January 2010

Haitians rescue a woman trapped beneath rubble in the capital Port-au-Prince, minutes after an earthquake hit on 12 January. The quake struck with an epicenter 15 kilometers southwest of the capital, near the town of Leogane. More than 50 aftershocks followed. Some 230,000 people were killed, 300,000 injured and more than a million left homeless. In explaining the extent of the damage, a senior Red Cross official said that it would take 200 trucks a total of 11 years to clear the rubble caused by the quake.

About:
Daniel Morel was born in Haiti in 1951. The day he discovered photography wasn't the happiest of days, but it set the stage for the rest of his life. It was November 12, 1964, in Port-au Prince. The Haitian government canceled school and people were bussed in from miles around to watch the execution of Louis Drouin and Marcel Numa. The two young men were the last two survivors of a 13-member group that called themselves ‘Jeune Haiti' (Young Haiti). The group had planned to overthrow the regime of Francois ‘Papa Doc' Duvalier.
