A man falls to his death from a turret of Liberty Bridge in Budapest, Hungary, after covering himself in flammable liquid and setting himself alight.

Ein Mann springt von einem Turm der Freiheitsbrücke in Budapest, Ungarn, nachdem er sich mit einer brennbaren Flüssigkeit übergossen und angezündet hat. Feuerwehrleute hatten eine halbe Stunde lang versucht, den etwa 40-jährigen Mann von seiner Absicht abzubringen. Das Selbstmordmotiv ist unklar.

Un hombre se suicida saltando desde la torrecilla del puente Liberty en Budapest (Hungría), tras haberse rociado con un líquido inflamable y prendido fuego. Los bomberos trataron de convencer durante media hora al hombre, de unos 40 años, para que descendiera. Se desconocen los motivos que le llevaron al suicidio.

Un homme, âgé d’environ 40 ans, se jette d’une tourelle du pont de la Liberté à Budapest, Hongrie, après s’être aspergé d’un liquide inflammable et y avoir mis le feu. Les pompiers ont essayé pendant une demiheure de l’en dissuader. Les motifs de son acte restent inconnus.

Un uomo si suicida lanciandosi da una torretta del Ponte della Libertà a Budapest, Ungheria, dopo essersi cosparso di liquido infiammabile ed essersi dato fuoco. Per mezz’ora i vigili del fuoco avevano tentato di convincere l’uomo, quarantenne, a scendere. Non si conoscono i motivi del gesto.

Een man werpt zich van een torentje van de Vrijheidsbrug in Boedapest nadat hij zichzelf met een brandbare vloeistof heeft overgegoten en in brand gestoken. Eerder probeerde de Hongaarse brandweer de man van ongeveer 40 nog een half uur om te praten. Het is onbekend waarom hij zelfmoord pleegde.

Péter Lakatos was born in Hungary in 1975, and studied engineering and education before turning to photography. From 1995 to 2002, he worked on the production side of radio and television for Hungarian national broadcasting companies. He then worked freelance as a writer and photojournalist for various Hungarian newspapers and magazines before contracting as a photojournalist to the Hungarian Press Agency (MTI). Among his honors are two Hungarian Press Photo Awards (2010 and 2011).
