World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch announced that they have set up a joint initiative to honor the late Tim Hetherington. The first recipient of the Tim Hetherington grant will be announced on 7 November.

Today World Press Photo has launched a new website as a step forward in its strategy to invest in online initiatives to fulfill its mission. Under the motto: 'We exist to inspire understanding of the world through quality photojournalism', the new site is designed to showcase the award-winning photography in a wider context than before, and also to provide a platform for educational resources and publishing activities under the new Academy section.

World Press Photo decided to close its exhibition in Beirut, Lebanon, on Friday, ten days in advance of the official closing date. The presence of prize-winning work by an Israeli photojournalist in the exhibition had sparked protests locally and the Beirut exhibition organizers felt they could no longer guarantee the safety of the visitors or the exhibit itself, if the pictures remained on display.

Today World Press Photo announced the prizewinners of the first World Press Photo Multimedia Contest, with jury member Claudine Boeglin of Thomson Reuters Foundation handing out the prizes to the winners at the annual Awards Ceremony in Amsterdam.

Twelve young photographers have been selected to come together with a group of masters for the 18th annual World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass to be held from 28 October to 3 November 2011 in the Kunstenhuis in the Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.
