On 11 October 2012, an exhibition of work by photographers from Southeastern Europe opened in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the first stop of a tour showcasing the work of 15 photographers who participated in the SEE New Perspectives workshop. Following Sarajevo, the exhibition will continue on to Belgrade, Berlin, and Zagreb.
In September - December 2010, 15 young professional photographers from Southeastern Europe took part in SEE New Perspectives, a training program that aimed to increase their professional development and strengthen their storytelling skills.
Images of the Balkans from the 1990s have largely shaped the perception of the region across the world, as well as within the region. The masterclass aimed to challenge existing perceptions and to encourage photographers to explore new perspectives of the region.
The masterclass was divided into three phases. During the first workshop in September in Berlin, Germany, the participants were tutored by three prominent international figures in photography: Regina Anzenberger, Silvia Omedes, and Donald Weber.
The workshop included lectures on the theory of photojournalism, practical exercises, individual reviews, training in online utilities, and interactive presentations by the tutors. The participants elaborated on and discussed their proposal for the assignment, which they completed between mid-September and the end of November 2010.
For the assignment, the participants were asked to produce a photo story on a certain topic. They created this story outside of their home country, but within the region of Southeastern Europe. During the production of the photo story, participants received online coaching from the tutors who evaluated their progress, proposed next steps, and advised participants on the final edit.
The results of the assignment were presented to and discussed with the other participants and tutors in a final three-day seminar at the beginning of December 2010 in Berlin.
A selection of the best work has been brought together in an exhibition that showcases the results of the project to relevant stakeholders including press in the region.
