Investigating important issues

In the six decades the World Press Photo Foundation has been working from its home in Amsterdam as an independent, nonprofit organization, the world has changed continuously, and new developments in the media and technology have transformed journalism and storytelling. Our mission has expanded, and we draw on our experience to guide visual journalists, storytellers, and audiences around the world through this challenging and exciting landscape.

Impact Report

The Impact Report 2022 documents the implementation of our regional strategy. It reflects on our values and long-term outlook as an organization, and transparently shares what we have achieved, our challenges and where there is still work to be done.
 

Technical Reports

The Technical Report series makes public data related to issues of diversity, representation, and verification in the annual World Press Photo Contest.

Starting from 2022, data previously included in the Technical Report, will now be part of the Impact Report (see above section).

Previous Research

The State of News Photography

The State of News Photography series (2015 - 2018) presents information about the world’s professional photographic community, with a special focus the lives and livelihoods of photojournalists in the digital age. It is a research project conducted by the University of Stirling in the UK and the World Press Photo Foundation and is based on a survey of entrants to the World Press Photo Contest. In 2015 and 2016 the reports focused on survey results from those years. In 2018 the report is based on an overview of the online survey of professional photographers who entered the annual World Press Photo Contest in the four years between 2015 and 2018 and contains new data on the demographics and identities of that population.

Integrity of the Image report 

The Integrity of the Image Report (November 2014) examines the current practice and internationally accepted standards concerning the manipulation of still images in photojournalism, concluding with a review of the challenges for verification.

Multimedia Research Report 

The Multimedia Research Report (April 2013) examines the current practices in multimedia against the background of the disruption in the traditional media economy, and the revolution in how people consume news.
