On 13 May 13 2011, Derek Boogaard was found dead of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol. He was 28 and a professional ice hockey player in the National Hockey League. The New York Times spent six months exploring Derek Boogaard's tumultuous life and untimely death. A print series, a video documentary, and multiple interactive graphics and elements give readers an opportunity to meet Boogaard's grieving family, his friends, his boyhood coaches, his fellow fighters, and the scientists who analyzed his brain.
