In July and August, no civilian was safe in the streets. A sniper could be lurking around every corner, though it was not always clear which ethnic group was responsible for a particular act of violence. The city also came under attack from the surrounding hills. Shortages of water, food, medication and fuel made it hard to live normally even during lulls in the fighting. By the end of the year, more than 50,000 people were estimated to have died in the civil war in former Yugoslavia.
