An engineer in an overhead gondola co-ordinates experiments in the tunnel. In the particle accelerator, a 27km-long tunnel, 150m under the earth, scientists at the CERN Institute near Geneva in Switzerland make subatomic particles collide at speeds of up to 300,000km per second - as part of their research into the material make-up of the universe.
