Members of the 34,000-strong Nenets ethnic group lead a nomadic life. The Nenets' life revolves around raising reindeer. The men go out onto the tundra every day to herd the deer, which are trained to pull the sleds that transport each family's home and possessions. Reindeer provide food, clothing, transport and shelter to the Nenets, whose tepee-like tents, called chum, are made of reindeer pelts.
