Funeral workers prepare a child victim of the violence for mass burial. For decades Sri Lanka has suffered fighting between government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels, who want an independent homeland in the north and east. Despite a four-year-old ceasefire agreement, conflict once again broke out in late 2005 and continued to grow even though both sides at first reaffirmed their commitment to peace.
