A soldier attends the funeral of army chief of staff Major General Parami Kulatunga, whose murder on June 26 led to an increase in violence. For decades Sri Lanka has suffered fighting between government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels, who want an independent homeland in the north and east. Despite a four-year-old ceasefire agreement, conflict once again broke out in late 2005 and continued to grow even though both sides at first reaffirmed their commitment to peace.
