Fabiola Ferrero

6x6 South America Talent: Fabiola Ferrero, Venezuela

“Fabiola has been documenting the crisis in her native Venezuela for years. She translates feelings of despair, loss of hope and sadness into a personal, visual testimony of a country in ruins. Her work goes beyond the realm of classic visual journalism and touches the visceral, the profound and the utterly engaging. Her perseverance and strong body of work make her one to watch.” - Laura Beltrán Villamizar, photography editor, educator, founder of Native Agency and 6x6 nominator, Colombia

Fabiola Ferrero, born in Caracas, is a journalist and photographer currently based between Venezuela and Colombia. Her work is the result of growing up in one of the most dangerous cities in the world, which led her to explore how societies act under hostile contexts and to focus on the human condition through writing and photography. Fabiola is the winner of the Emerging Vision Award 2017 by The Documentary Project Fund and a PH Museum Women Photographers Grant 2017 ‘New Generation Honorable Mention’.

Blurred in Despair

Though the protests in Venezuela have ceased, the crisis throughout the country continues to deepen. ‘Blurred in Despair’ is a long-term investigation of the psychological consequences of Venezuela’s crisis on its people. Several experts say that Venezuelans are indeed changing. Citizens are putting off their hopes and dreams, forced to adapt to whatever the new circumstances are: more inflation, less food and medicine, and increasing fear due to higher criminal rates. The increasing hostility of daily life has created debilitating psychosocial trauma for citizens and people have begun to feel lost in their quest for survival. This colorful Caribbean nation now appears somber as society floats weightless with uncertainty for the future.

MotherEarthConflict

‘MotherEarthConflict’ is a documentary project made with Fujifilm Instax cameras that aims to pay close attention to the peace process in the rural areas of Colombia after decades of armed conflict. It’s a reflection of the everlasting issues of the land and inequity by exploring the daily life of families that depend solely on coca incomes, their relation to nature and their state of mind. Forgotten by the state, the coca farmers float in limbo between a fear of the past and hopes for the future–wishing that a happier and peaceful chapter could soon start for their communities.

Fabiola Ferrero received nominations from Laura Beltrán Villamizar, Luisa Dörr, Claudi Carreras Guillén, Stephen Ferry, Amel Pain, Anna Kućma and Eefje Ludwig.
