Gary Knight is a photographer and photojournalist, and a co-founder of VII Photo agency. His entry into photojournalism came in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when he lived in South East Asia, portraying conflict within a region coming to terms with the end of the Cold War. By 1993, he had returned to Europe and was focusing on documenting various forms of injustice, from war crimes to poverty—issues that continue to be the primary focus of his professional life. From 1999 to 2009, Knight was a contract photographer for Newsweek, during which time he photographed the invasion of Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, Darfur, and other significant world events. In 2009, he was awarded a prestigious Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University and moved to the USA. In 2010, Knight founded the Program for Narrative & Documentary Practice, at the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University. He is also a co-founder and director of GroundTruth, a US-based non-profit media foundation, co-founder of a publishing company, Rethink-Dispatches, and of the Angkor Photo Festival and Workshops. Knight divides his time between academia and working on long-term photography projects. He has been a member of the World Press Photo contest jury on three previous occasions, and in 2008 was on the online jury selecting photojournalists to participate in the organization’s MENA (Middle East and North Africa) training program.
