Denise Camargo is a visual artist and curator, working with photographic images, writing, and performative readings. She is a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the Federal University of Brasília in the postgraduate programme.
Camargo’s artistic work concerns the poetics of relationships, the ancestral matrices of the black diasporas, and territories of social and political resistance. Her approach is autobiographical and decolonial.
She has a PhD in Arts from the University of Campinas, São Paulo State; a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and a Master's degree in Communication Sciences, both from the School of Communication and Arts at the University of São Paul. She was awarded the 'Jornal da Tarde' Journalism Award, which granted her a scholarship for postgraduate studies at the University of Navarra, Spain, where she was under supervision of photographer Koldo Chamorro. In the 1990s, she was a photojournalist and editor for publications specialized in the diffusion of Brazilian photography.
Camargo is part of the curatorial team for the BredaPhoto Festival.
She offers artistic mentoring; participates in Brazilian photography festivals doing portfolio reviews; and in her Ateliê Oju, she develops sociocultural and curatorial projects of her own and for other artists.
