Roberto Schmidt

Roberto Schmidt is a Colombian/German photographer based in New Delhi, India, where he is the chief photographer for South Asia for Agence France-Presse (AFP).
 
Born in Bogota, Colombia, in 1966, Schmidt has spent more than 25 years with AFP covering breaking news around the world, including conflict and social unrest in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. Among the main stories that Schmidt has covered have been the violence following Kenya’s 2007 election, Israel’s war in Gaza, the invasion of Iraq by US troops, the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti and most recently the killer earthquake in Nepal. 
 
In his current posting, Schmidt manages a team of 30 photographers and four editors to coordinate the photo production for AFP in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Maldives. He was based previously in Nairobi, Miami and Bogota.
 
Schmidt’s photographs have been previously awarded prizes at the World Press Photo, POYi, Overseas Press Club and NPPA contests.
