Daniel Merle is a curator and picture editor. He was born in Buenos Aires, and studied fine arts at school and journalism at the University of Buenos Aires.
He worked freelance for The New York Times during the first years of democracy in Argentina, in the 1980s. From 1979 to 1989, he was also a staff photographer for the Sunday magazine of the national newspaper La Nación. He moved on to work as a staff photographer for Reuters, covering stories all over South America, from guerrillas in Colombia and the growth of democracy in Chile, to the Pan-American Games in Cuba and the Copa América (American soccer cup).
In 1993, Merle moved to Argentina’s popular national daily Clarin, as picture editor for its Sunday magazine Viva. As a photographer, he covered the Cuban exodus to Florida, and did a reportage on the Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, at home in Colombia. In 1997, Merle returned to work for La Nación, as a picture editor for the Sunday magazine. Since 2007 he has also been writing a regular blog about photography for La Nación, and has covered photo festivals all over the world, from the New York Photo Festival to Visa pour l’Image, in Perpignan.
