About

Samuel Bollendorff

France

Samuel Bollendorff has been working as a photojournalist since 1995. He was a member of the Œil Public agency, until it closed in 2010. Bollendorff has worked with a number of newspapers, offering a social perspective on French institutions such as hospitals, schools, prisons, and the police.

Photography is, for him, a way of thinking politics through and of questioning the place of the individual in society; a quest he has pursued not only in France (in projects such as Hospital Silence, on the place of the individual in the clinical environment), but also in Asia (for example, The Forced March, focusing on those forgotten by the Chinese economic miracle), and in Africa, where he tackled the Angolan oil trade. Bollendorff was one of the first photojournalists to make use of multimedia interfaces on the web. With Voyage au Bout du Charbon, The Big Issue, and À l’Abri de Rien, he tries out new ways of narration and broadcasting in web documentaries. His last production Burn Out – Le Grand Incendie received the Visa d'Or for web documentary at Visa pour l'Image 2014.
