Tony Vaccaro


Tony Vaccaro (Greensburg, Pennsylvania, 1922), also known as Michael A. Vaccaro, is best known for his photos taken in Europe during the Second World War. Vaccaro, son of Italian immigrants, had been drafted into the U.S. army in 1943 and sent to Europe in 1944. After the war, he stayed in Europe working as a photographer for the U.S. authorities, stationed in Frankfurt, and for the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes. After his return to the United States in 1949, he worked for Life and Look magazines, photographing celebritites and fasion.
