Alejandro León Cannock
Peru
Alejandro León Cannock is a PhD researcher at École nationale supérieure de la photographie (ENSP) in Arles and Aix-Marseille University, curator, visual artist, and lecturer who lives and works in Arles.
His research intersects aesthetics, philosophy, and politics, with a focus on photography’s role in challenging extractivist thinking and promoting ecosophical ideas.
He holds a PhD in Artistic Research from ENSP and Aix-Marseille University, along with a master’s in Contemporary Latin American Photography (Centro de la Imagen, 2015) and a master’s in Philosophy with a dissertation on Gilles Deleuze (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2009).
Currently, he is a Non-Tenured Teaching and Research Fellow (Attaché Temporaire d’Enseignement et de Recherche, ATER) at Aix-Marseille University. Alejandro is a member of the Research Council at ENSP, the Editorial Board of FOT (Peru), and the Academic Advisory Board of NoImagen (Chile).
He served as curator of the Peruvian Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Art Biennale and has led several curatorial projects, including Poetics of Gesture, Politics of the Document (PhotoEspaña 2024). His work has been exhibited internationally in China, Mexico, and Uruguay. Recent publications include ‘Seeing / Knowing: Photographic Practice as Artistic Research’ (Marges, 2024) and ‘Photographing the ‘Bowels of the Earth’: Notes on Contemporary Latin American Photography’ (DongGang Photography Festival Catalog, 2024).
