Nariman El-Mofty

Nariman El-Mofty is an independent photojournalist, documentary photographer, photo editor, and educator whose work spans the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. Her practice is rooted in a commitment to human rights, visual storytelling, and the power of photography to bear witness.

A two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, El-Mofty began her career as a photo editor before becoming a staff photojournalist with The Associated Press. In 2019, she was part of the AP team awarded the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for its coverage of the war in Yemen. In 2023, she received her second Pulitzer Prize as part of the AP team recognized for Breaking News Photography for its coverage of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Her work has received international recognition, including the Overseas Press Club’s Olivier Rebbot Award, the Robert Capa Citation for Excellence, and the Robert Capa Gold Medal. Her photographs have also been exhibited internationally, including at Visa pour l’Image in France and WARM in Sarajevo.

Beyond her journalistic work, El-Mofty has a deep appreciation for art and a keen interest in exploring photography beyond the conventions of traditional journalism. She is particularly drawn to the process of storytelling: the questions, ethical considerations, and decisions that shape how and why a story is told. She continually questions established practices and narratives, examining the assumptions and perspectives that influence how stories are developed and presented.

More recently, she has been contributing to The New York Times while remaining actively engaged in education, mentorship, workshops, and judging panels across a range of journalistic disciplines.
