Susan Watts graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in film at New York University before becoming a photojournalist. Since 1995, she has been a staff photographer at the New York Daily News, covering local, national and international spot news, features, politics and sports assignments. In addition, her work has appeared in magazines, including Life, Newsweek, US News & World Report, The Sunday Times Magazine, People and L'Express. She has received numerous professional honors, and her exhibitions include a solo show at Visa Pour l’Image in Perpignan. Her photographs have been acquired by the Library of Congress and The Smithsonian Institution. From June 1997 until June 1999, Susan Watts served as the first woman president of the New York Press Photographers Association. In 2007, she produced an outdoor, public photo exhibition in New York City's historic Battery Park titled 'Milestones to Recovery', a photographic celebration of the rebirth and revitalization of Lower Manhattan in the years since the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.
