Irina Chmyreva

Irina Chmyreva, PhD, photography historian, curator of photography exhibitions and AICA member currently lives in Moscow.

Since 1996 she has worked as a researcher and curator in institutions such as Moscow Museum of Modern Art, ROSIZO State Center for Museums and Exhibitions of the Ministry of Culture of Russia.

Chmyreva has been a member of the international editorial board of European Photography magazine since 2000, and was a guest editor of OjoDePez magazine (Spain) for a special publication on Russian photography (2006). She runs lecture programs in visual communication and photography in Russian history at the Institute of Professional Photography, Moscow. She is also a guest lecturer at European Institute of Design in Madrid, Spain.

In 2012 Chmyreva was one of five Russian and American curators selected for the Contemporary Russian Photography program for International Biennial FotoFest in Houston, USA. She has also written for the FotoFest 2012 catalogue. In 2013 she was on the Syngenta Prize committee and in 2014 she was on the jury committee of the Hasselblad Award.

Since 2007 she has worked as a senior researcher at the National Institute for Theory and History of Fine Arts, Russian Academy of Arts. In 2008 she co-founded the International Festival of Photography PhotoVisa in Krasnodar, Russia and has been the festival's art director since.

Chmyreva is the author of the Russian chapters in three volumes of History of European Photography of 20 century. She is author and co-author of several books on the history of Russian photography. Her last book Collection of Essays on History of Russian Photography was published in 2016.
