About

Yasuyoshi Chiba

Japan

Yasuyoshi Chiba is the Chief Photographer with Agence France-Presse (AFP) for Indonesia and East Timor.

After starting his career as a staff photographer at The Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan’s national newspapers, he worked as a freelancer in Kenya before joining AFP in 2011.

He has been based in Brazil, Kenya, and Indonesia—countries that once intersected with his life. Chiba believes that carefully chosen facts can evoke empathy more powerfully than any explanation, a principle reflected throughout his work.

His photography has received multiple international recognitions, including the World Press Photo of the Year in 2020.
