Denise Camargo

Denise Camargo, born in São Paulo and based in Brasília, Brazil, is a photographer with experience in visual arts, teaching and curating. She is an undergraduate professor of photography and a researcher in the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts at the University of Brasília, around Methods, Processes and Languages. 

Her focuses are the creative processes and the image in Afro-Brazilian matrixes, whilst producing images, cultural and curatorial projects. At the Ateliê Oju, a cultural management venture, she develops her own, as well as those of other artists, offering artistic guidance and conducting portfolio reviews. Camargo has been a member of the national and international selection committees for photography awards, exhibitions, and festivals. She taught photography at the Senac University Center, São Paulo. She was a photojournalist for Agência Estado (Jornal da Tarde and O Estado de S. Paulo newspapers) and editor-in-chief of Irisfoto Magazine, the main magazine of Brazilian photography of its day. 

Throughout her professional career, Camargo has received awards such as the Jornal da Tarde Journalism Award at the beginning of his career; the Palmares Award for the publication of his doctoral thesis Imagética do candomblé: uma criação no espaço mítico-ritual (Imagery of Candomblé: a creation in the mythical-ritual space); and the Brazil Photography Award. She participates in individual and collective exhibitions and residencies. She is one of 240 artists selected for the exhibition Dos Brasis: Arte e Pensamento Negro (From Brazil: Black Art and Thought) in São Paulo (2023/2024) and in Rio de Janeiro (2024/2025). This exhibition will tour Brazil for 10 years.

Camargo has a PhD in Arts; a Master's degree in Communication Sciences; a Bachelor's degree in Journalism; and she has completed a postdoctoral fellowship studying Curating as an artistic practice and method.
