2024 World Press Photo Contest Global Winners Event

On 18 April, our regional partners for Africa, The Market Photo Workshop, will host an event live in Johannesburg to celebrate the announcement of the 2024 World Press Photo Contest global winners. Each of the four global winners will be presented and a special guest will be in attendance.

Alongside this special guest, Professor Shepherd Mpofu and Dr. Kholeka Shange will be present to speak about the importance of investigative photojournalism in the age of disinformation, highlighting the power of researched stories. Moderator Naledi Moleo will navigate the impact of digital technology on photojournalism and how photojournalistic values are challenged or changed within the context of digital technologies like social media.

The four global winners of the 2024 World Press Photo Contest will be announced on World Press Photo’s website and social channels earlier in the day, at 11.00 AM CEST / GMT+2.

Speakers

Professor Shepherd Mpofu

Shepherd Mpofu is a professor of media and communication science and NRF rated researcher based in South Africa. His research interests mainly include digital media, elections, protests, democracy, diaspora studies, race, identity, violence and genocide in media. With numerous publications in esteemed local and international outlets, he provides expert commentary to both local and international media on these topics.

Dr. Kholeka Shange

Dr. Kholeka Shange is a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand's Anthropology department who specializes in archive theory, photography, Princess Magogo, Zulu royal women, Zulu historiography, and isiZulu concepts. Additionally, she serves as the Anthropology Museum curator and seminar series coordinator at Wits. With a PhD in History of Art from WSOA and experience directing youth development projects, she has contributed to publications like JCAS and the Mail & Guardian as a Book Review Editor.

Naledi Moleo

Naledi Moleo is a seasoned broadcaster and communications expert with over 20 years of experience in news and current affairs. She currently anchors the daily breakfast show 'AMReport' on Newzroom Afrika, showcasing her passion for journalism and commitment to making information accessible to all.

About The Market Photo Workshop

The Market Photo Workshop, the Africa regional partner for the World Press Photo Foundation, is a Johannesburg-based school of photography, gallery and resource center for practicing photographers. Since its establishment in 1989, the school has played an integral role in the training and growth of photographers from South Africa and further afield, while promoting photography through exhibitions, public debates and collaborative projects, especially within marginalized communities.
