And the Lands Ground Against Each Other Until the Dust Chokes the Sky

This multimedia project explores the relationship between Morocco and Algeria through a personal lens. The land border has been closed since 1994, and the air border since 2021. Propaganda in media and on social networks has fueled hatred between people who have never met.

“This project is a personal diary — a love letter, sometimes joyful, sometimes angry — to both countries, to myself, my loved ones, and to all who have surrendered their fate to bots and headlines.” – Imane Djamil

“One of my best friends, Celia Bougdal, an Algerian photographer, looking through a natural fence. This photograph was taken on a camping trip we did in 2023 near Mostaganem, Algeria, a few days after three Moroccan jet skiers were shot by the Algerian Army after accidentally riding in Algerian waters. Like every summer, I heard all sorts of stories from people trying to prevent me from going to Algeria because of how risky it is for a Moroccan, especially after another diplomatic incident.” – Imane Djamil

2025 Joop Swart Masterclass

Since June, the 2025 Joop Swart Masterclass participants have been working on their projects under the guidance of their mentors and participating in online thematic presentations by a lineup of industry professionals. In November, the group came together in Amsterdam for an intensive week of workshops, visits, talks, and the final project presentations, where the 13 photographers shared their work in progress during a special event.

For the second year in a row, the 29th edition of the Joop Swart Masterclass continued to focus on the MENA region, thanks to funding from the Porticus Foundation.
