2024 Contest entries open

2024 World Press Photo Contest now open for entries

The 2024 World Press Photo Contest is now open for submissions until 11 January 2024, 13.00 CET (Amsterdam time). Entering the contest is free and open to all professional photographers working in the field of photojournalism and/or documentary photography.

Qualifying photographers may enter here.

Do you know someone who should enter this contest? Or have you seen work you think should be part of it? Please share this with the photographer.

This is the third contest working with our regional model. There will be six regional juries, which forward top entries to a global jury made up of the regional jury chairs plus a global chair. We are working with our regional partners, Drik Picture Library in Bangladesh and The Market Photo Workshop in South Africa to better connect to local networks. We want the 2024 Contest to be a platform that reflects the important stories that were made across the world this year.

Introducing the 2024 Contest global jury chair: Fiona Shields

Fiona Shields has over 20 years’ picture editing experience across a range of newspaper titles. She is also a curator, speaker on photojournalism and photography mentor. She was picture editor of The Guardian for ten years before taking up her current role as Head of Photography for Guardian News and Media Group.

Throughout her career she has been involved in the coverage of some of the most historic news stories of our time including the events surrounding 9/11, conflicts around the world, large-scale natural disasters, and the humanitarian crises resulting from the growing refugee numbers across the globe.

In addition she has judged numerous high-profile photographic awards including the World Press Photo Contest, the Sony World Photography Awards, The Carmignac Photojournalism Award, and The Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. She is a regular nominator for the Prix Pictet Prize.

Executive director of the World Press Photo Foundation, Joumana El Zein Khoury, said:

The first month alone of the latest Israel-Hamas war was the deadliest for journalists in any conflict recorded by the Committee to Protect Journalists since 1992. While we mourn the killing of Palestinian, Israeli and Lebanese journalists and civilians, equally we must acknowledge the one-sidedness of the death toll - with 50 Palestinian, 4 Israeli, and 3 Lebanese journalists killed so far.

It is with this weighing heavily on our minds that we open our contest to all professional press and documentary photographers, regardless of location or topic. Without them, all of us would be blind to the reality of important stories there and around the world.
