Giovanna Calvenzi has taught the history and language of photography for 11 years, contributing at the same time to various magazines. She has taught the MA publishing course at the Graduate School of Humanistic Studies in Bologna since October 2002. Calvenzi has worked as a picture editor for several Italian magazines, and since January 2000 has been the picture editor of SportWeek, the magazine of La Gazzetta dello Sport. She has helped plan and set up exhibitions and produce photo books, and is very involved with research in contemporary photography. In 1998, Calvenzi was artistic director of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles, and in 2002 guest curator of PhotoEspaƱa in Madrid. She was a master at the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass in 1994 and 1999 and a previous jury member for the 1994, 2005 and 2010 World Press Photo contests.
