Founded in 1998 as both a digital design studio and an interactive production company, over the years Upian has become increasingly focused on the creation and redesign of media sites (newspapers, radio, television), and digital communication tools for institutions and brands that wish to communicate with the general public about important social issues.
For the last 10 years, Upian has also been an internationally recognized documentary film production company. It was actively involved in pioneering the web documentary both in France and at the international level. The company has produced, among others: Thanatorama (2007), Gaza-Sderot (2008), Prison Valley (2010), Alma, a tale of violence (2012), Generation Quoi (2013).
In April 2015, Upian launched Do Not Track, a personalized documentary series about privacy and the web economy, directed by Brett Gaylor. This international project, co-produced by Arte (France), the NFB (Canada), and BR (Germany) reached an audience of more than 750,000 in 2 months. The series was then purchased by the United States (AJ+), Canada (Radio-Canada), and Switzerland (RTS).
In 2016, it released Offside, a non-linear documentary about football, co-produced with Arte and BR and Generation What. a transmedia project about youth all across Europe. Following the success of GenerationQuoi in France, 13 more countries bought into the concept, leading to a Europe-wide adoption of the format. The program has already gathered more than 870,000 respondents around Europe.
