David Guttenfelder

David Guttenfelder is a visual journalist for The New York Times based in Minneapolis, covering geopolitical conflict, humanitarian crises, environmental issues, and social injustice.

Over a 30-year career, he has reported on major world events from assignments across the globe. In 2011, he helped open a bureau in Pyongyang for the Associated Press, the first Western news agency to establish an office in North Korea, and has since made more than 40 reporting trips to the country.

Guttenfelder has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize multiple times, received the ICP Infinity Award for Photojournalism, and been recognized by the Overseas Press Club of America. Pictures of the Year International and the National Press Photographers Association have each named him Photojournalist of the Year. A photograph of his, made in North Korea, was included in TIME magazine’s list of the ‘100 Most Influential Photographs of All Time’.
