Nina Berman

Nina Berman has been an editorial and documentary photographer for more than 20 years, focusing primarily on the American political and social landscape. She is the author of Purple Hearts – Back from Iraq (2004) a book of portraits and interviews with wounded American war veterans and Homeland (2008), an examination of militarism in post 9/11 America. Her work has been exhibited at more than 100 solo and group exhibitions in the US and Europe, most recently at the Dublin Contemporary in 2011 and the Whitney Museum of American Art 2010 Biennial. Her awards include a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship, two World Press Photo awards, an Open Society Institute documentary grant and a Hasselblad Masters award. She taught at the International Center of Photography in New York City from 1999 – 2009 and was an artist in residence at the Whitney Museum in 2010. She is currently working with the Whitney Museum to create a photo curriculum based on her books for New York City high schools. She is a member of Noor images, a photography collective based in Amsterdam.
