Mission

The World Press Photo Foundation is a major force in developing and promoting the work of visual journalists and visual storytellers, with a range of activities and initiatives that span the globe.

We were formed in 1955, when a group of Dutch photographers organized a contest to expose their work to international colleagues and exchange knowledge with them. That annual competition has since grown into one of the most prestigious awards in photojournalism and digital storytelling, the exhibition it produces is seen by four million people worldwide each year, and the World Press Photo Foundation has become much more than a contest.

Freedom of expression, freedom of speech and freedom of the press are indispensable, and quality visual journalism is essential for the accurate and independent reporting that makes these freedoms possible. We work to develop and promote quality visual journalism and visual storytelling because people deserve to see their world and express themselves freely.

Today, when the world, the press and photography itself are undergoing seismic changes - and when visual literacy is more important than ever - we strive to help visual journalists and storytellers, as well as their audience, understand and respond to these transformations so these freedoms can be secured and creativity can flourish. To help achieve this we partner with a number of international organisations.

We help visual journalists and visual storytellers present their work to a global audience, celebrate the highest standards of visual journalism, and encourage fresh insights and new perspectives.

To educate
The future of visual journalism and storytelling depends on developing diverse talent and exploring new opportunities. With visuals now at the heart of human communication, the need for visual literacy is greater than ever. Our many educational projects around the world, led by the annual Joop Swart Masterclass, foster both good journalistic practice and creative storytelling. Through research, analysis and debate involving both the profession and the public, we seek new ways forward in meeting the many challenges confronting image makers.

We are committed to freedom of expression, freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and as they come under increasing threat, we are redoubling our efforts to connect with visual journalists and their global audience to create a positive future for high-quality reporting and storytelling that can be trusted.

Our organization

The World Press Photo Foundation has its headquarters (and only office) in Amsterdam, where our Managing Director Lars Boering leads a team of 26 staff. If we have vacancies, they are advertised on our jobs page. Our patron is Prince Constantijn of The Netherlands. A Supervisory Board oversees proper governance of the organization and its programs, with the help of an international Advisory Board.

Our programs are supported in a variety of ways. The World Press Photo Foundation receives support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery and is sponsored worldwide by Canon. The World Press Photo Associates offer a valued partnership, and the Friends of World Press Photo receive many benefits for their financial contribution. We sell museum-quality, limited edition, prize-winning prints as well as photo books in our online store. In addition, we have a range of collaborations with our supporters and contributors.
