“This project resonates with me through my own experience of growing up in Colombia, where machismo and gender inequality shaped many aspects of girls’ lives. From an early age, I witnessed adolescent pregnancy, early sexualization, and the gender roles imposed on girls from childhood. I also saw how ideas about gender, limited opportunities and a lack of knowledge about sexual and reproductive health could shape girls’ paths. These experiences inform the way I approach the young women I photograph. Through long-term relationships, I explore the space between girlhood and motherhood, and the ways these experiences shape identity, care and imagined futures.” – Nathalia Angarita
