Cécile Smetana Baudier

Cécile Smetana Baudier is a French/Danish photographer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her work documents stories of displacement, such as the Afro-Mexican diaspora, the Central African diaspora and the connection between North Africa and Southern Europe.

“Cécile Smetana Baudier has a defined presence in her photography that can’t be taught. Whether she is photographing in her home country of Denmark or other locations in the world, she uses the same approach and makes the viewer feel like different realities are connected. Her images embody an emotional essence that goes beyond visual trickery, and her portraiture is captivating and piercing,” said Malin Fezehai, photographer and Joop Swart Masterclass nominator.

Her 2020 Joop Swart Masterclass project follows identical twins Anna and Thea’s transition to adulthood, in an exploration of the human connection. At the age of 16, Anna and Thea are about to go to boarding school, meet new friends and face the world on their own. Through their story, Cécile Smetana Baudier wants to create an intimate story of sisterhood and teenage life that highlights the importance of physical and psychological connection to others.

2020 Joop Swart Masterclass

For the first time, due to the current global health crisis, the Joop Swart Masterclass is taking place online over a period of four months, and 24 participants and eight masters have been selected to make the program more inclusive.

The educational experience of the Joop Swart Masterclass is based on an assignment to produce a photo essay around a given theme. This year the theme is ‘Reset’.

From July to October 2020, the participants will work on their projects and receive mentorship and guidance from the mentors. The final projects will be presented in November 2020. Learn more about the 2020 Joop Swart Masterclass
