“Compared to the hopeful, bright side of reset, I'm more interested in what's left behind and would continue to influence the way we live in the form of memory.”

Yufan Lu is a photographer based in China. She is interested in exploring social identities and the way visualization works in everyday life.

“Yufan Lu is a promising, thoughtful young artist working in the space between documentary photography and art. Her project on notions of beauty and plastic surgery in China has great potential,” said Sim Chi Yin, documentary photographer and Joop Swart Masterclass nominator.

Her 2020 Joop Swart Masterclass project looks at people's reaction to the latest public monitoring measure in China. Lu seeks to capture this moment of curiosity around the new monitoring devices while exploring how they change the perception of the world.

2020 Joop Swart Masterclass

For the first time, due to the current global health crisis, the Joop Swart Masterclass is taking place online over a period of four months, and 24 participants and eight masters have been selected to make the program more inclusive.

“I'm looking forward to solving some problems, both personal and professional, during this masterclass. Also, I don't have much experience learning online, so I'm quite curious about the experience,” Lu said.

The educational experience of the Joop Swart Masterclass is based on an assignment to produce a photo essay around a given theme. This year the theme is ‘Reset’.

“I think with what's going on in the world right now, the word Reset bears people's desire to return to their 'normal' life, although no one knows if the new 'normal' is still the one we used to live in. Compared to the hopeful, bright side of reset, I'm more interested in what's left behind and would continue to influence the way we live in the form of memory,” she said.

From July to October 2020, the participants will work on their projects and receive mentorship and guidance from the mentors. The final projects will be presented in November 2020. Learn more about the 2020 Joop Swart Masterclass
